Jesse: these “look pretty amazing”

Image of a possible living room generated by Desi, based on Jesse’s input. This final version was based on the feedback that despite generally liking the more maximalist Bohemian style, he’d prefer to see his space “without a bunch of random stuff on the wall”

Jesse T., a San Francisco-based data scientist in his 30s, had just moved into a new unfurnished space that didn’t feel like the comfortable home he craved…

Jesse had a very clear sense of what he wanted…

Note: Before beginning the process, we — the humans on the team ;) — secretly stored away a link Jesse had supplied to a photo of an interior he loved, without showing it to Desi. (Hold that thought; we’ll come back to this later…)

In Jesse’s standardized calibration interview with Desi, he expressed that he…

  • wanted tons of rattan & wood, but no stone or plastic

  • loved Boho and liked rustic & Farmhouse styles

  • had no real thoughts re: color

He added, “I'm going for a boho comfortable style with lots of pillows and blankets,” to effectively turn the couch into a “cuddle puddle.”

…and Desi understood perfectly.

Based on only those short answers, Desi mocked up the image at the top of this post as well as these three below:

“Checkhov’s Inspiration Photo”

Remember that example image from before? Well so did Jesse. He couldn’t believe how well Desi “read his mind.”

See for yourself, it’s right here — to the left ;)
(Or rather
above this whole text block if you’re on mobile; designing in physical space is much easier in some ways!)

Across the example rooms, Desi matched Jesse’s love of organic materials, woven hangings, and layered pillows in cream and earth tones. But unlike the inspiration photo, Desi matched his apartment’s taupe walls.

No wonder he said (of the two living room mock-ups): “those both look pretty amazing”

Now that you’ve read Jesse’s story…
